Food. A staple of our lives. Without it, we would perish. It can easily be taken for granted, which is why The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) joined forces to observe the safety of our food and give guidance as to what you can do to help bring awareness to food safety. On June 7, people from all over the world will be celebrating this year’s theme, “Safer Food, Better Health.”.

Contrary to what many may believe, food safety does not fall entirely on the shoulders of food companies.  Consumers should also be proactive in the prevention of food-borne illness by understanding the proper process of food handling, processing, transport, and storage. Since every person has a hand in the food safety world, it’s worth sharing some ideas on how you can do your part in decreasing food-borne illness. As a consumer, your voice is what will make a difference.

Here are some ideas on how to celebrate straight from the organizers:

Host a Webinar – Round up some experts in food safety to discuss how everyone plays a part in preventing foodborne illness. A Q&A session at the end will open the door for a conversation on topics of concern.

Organize a Public Event – A fantastic way to attract the public is to organize an event – a food festival, concert, or food tasting with key speakers to deliver the message of food safety.

Launch a Campaign – social media has become a great way to spread the word, and fast. Putting together a special post that includes material provided on the WHO website will always reach more people than you would think.

Hold a Sports Activity – What better to promote food safety than a healthy physical activity such as a marathon, run, or triathlon.

Reach out to Media – Get your local radio and news stations involved by providing materials for them to promote.

Whichever avenue you decide to take, getting the word out there is key. After all, “This international day is an opportunity to strengthen efforts to ensure that the food we eat is safe, mainstream food safety in the public agenda and reduce the burden of foodborne diseases globally..” The more knowledge people hold regarding food safety, the more they can contribute to the cause. Collectively, we can make a difference.

Our health keeps us going, and the food we put into our mouths plays a central role in maintaining good health. As a primary staple, the safety of our food is critical to our well-being. Do your part and help bring awareness to others. It’s up to you to take action and spread the word!
